# The summit of the real depends on nothing Follow holding upward. Each real thing rests on something more real that holds it, and that on something more real again. The summit is the one that holds all and is held by nothing, on which everything depends and which depends on none. That is what the old word God was reaching for: not the largest being among beings, but the ground on which being stands. # The ground of being is someone, not something When the real reaches its summit it does not fall silent; it speaks its own name. Ehyeh asher ehyeh, I will be what I will be. Not a being among beings but being itself, and being as living and still to come, not a substance fixed in place. The ground that holds all things is therefore not a thing but a faithfulness that keeps its word. This is why the floor of reality is relational and not material: at the bottom is not stuff but someone who holds. # Degree of reality is degree of holding A thing is real in the measure that it holds. Not in the force it exerts but in what depends on it, what it carries, what would fall if it gave way. A pebble pushes and is pushed and holds nothing; a covenant holds a life. So reality is not flat, a bare yes or no of existence, but a depth, and the deepest real is what bears the most. You can lean your weight on the real, and you fall through the rest. # To be is to be in relation Nothing exists alone. To be at all is to be held in relation and to hold in turn; a thing wholly out of relation would not be a lesser thing but no thing. Substance is the late arrival, the abstraction we make by forgetting the relations that were there first. Relation does not happen between things already real; it is what makes them real. This is the relational imperative read all the way down: not a rule for living but the grain of being. # As a man is, so he sees "To the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself. As a man is, so he sees" (William Blake). Perception is not a window but an expression of the perceiver's state, and we are all to some degree prisoners of an inherited way of perceiving reality that keeps us stuck. Transformation of the seer is therefore prior to new information; you do not argue someone into seeing differently.
