# Value was severed from being long before modernity We call the fact-value split a modern wound. But the cut is older. One of Plato's own heirs set the source beyond being and beyond good, making goodness a late and derivative thing. If the highest reality stands past all value, then value floats free of being at the very top, and the dichotomy we blame on the Enlightenment was already live inside the tradition that should most have resisted it. The temptation to ground reality in something other than the good is perennial. Provenance: Speusippus (4th c. BCE); the severing is firmly attested, since Aristotle argued against it.
