# Unity opens into multiplicity and coheres again Reality is neither a heap nor a blur. Unity opens into multiplicity, and the many gather into a higher unity, which opens again in turn: the form of a tree, one and many joined through hierarchy. So the separateness of things is the appearance and their prior unity the ground, which is why nothing ever stands alone. To be a distinct thing is already to be a place where the one has opened and is cohering back, and the same form holds at every scale. What looks like a crowd is a unity not yet seen.
