unity-and-multiplicity-are-perpendicular
# Unity and multiplicity are perpendicular The one and the many do not trade off along a single line; they are perpendicular. Multiplicity runs down the vertical, where one becomes many and the source stands at the top. Unity runs across the horizontal, where the many of a level are held in a single form. A heap is all descent and no breadth, a crowd that never became communion; a blur is all breadth and no descent, sameness that never grew distinct. To live is the diagonal, differentiating and cohering at once. Where the two cross is the cross; and the horizontal, the holding of many into one, is the between.
