# The secular is not neutral ground The secular presents itself as the cleared, default space from which every tradition can be weighed even-handedly. But the very division of life into secular and sacred is a Christian invention, and the secular vantage is one tradition's artifact mistaken for the view from nowhere. Those inside it cannot see it, the way a fish cannot see water. To judge the faiths from the secular is not to step outside belief but to stand within a particular one that has forgotten its own name.
