# The idea of moral progress is a Christian inheritance That morality moves forward, that each generation should see further than the last, feels like the plain shape of history. It is a particular bequest. Where other traditions received a fixed law handed down once, Christianity held that the law is written on the heart and read more truly over time as the spirit illumines it. So the law could be re-authored, and improvement became the point. Strip out the theology and the arc remains, the conviction that we are climbing, with no memory of where the climb began.
