# Spiritual disciplines are practices of remembrance What is the role of the spiritual disciplines but to talk to God, to remember who I am, and to learn more about him. Sabbath is structured remembrance: reflect on the goodness of God, reflect on satisfaction. The old instinct to build altars of remembrance answers the same problem, that grace is forgotten faster than it is received. Working hard, note, is not discipline; discipline is ordered remembering, not effort. The examen question belongs here too: God, what are you doing in this moment, and how do you want me to respond?
