# Relational being has three modes Relational being has three modes: exchange, experience, encounter. Exchange is the transactional baseline. Experience is shared participation in meaning, typified by the Himba practice of singing a child's song from conception. Encounter is the deepest: the courage to face your ego and venture into the unknown, the hero's journey whose boon is, in Ross's reading, the initiate's unutilised potential made real. Encounter therefore requires letting go of the outdated self so the transformed self can emerge, and internal integration precedes external expression.
