# Over-imitation is a bet on hidden purpose Shown a transparent puzzle box where only the last action releases the sweet, chimpanzees drop the redundant steps; children keep performing all of them. The children are not duller, they are placing a bet: that the adult acts with purpose they cannot yet access, and that enacting the behaviour may grant them the perspective. Over-imitation is faith in hidden intelligibility, and it is how humans bootstrap into frames they could not derive.
