original-sin-is-a-levelling-doctrine

# Original sin is a levelling doctrine To know yourself a sinner among sinners is a levelling, and a mercy. If all have fallen, none stands above another to judge, and the only honest posture is humility. Lose that shared sense of fallenness and a new class appears, those who believe themselves already virtuous, and from that height they can do little but weigh the ones who are not. What presents itself as moral progress can be the return of the elect, certain of their own purity. The conviction of one's own virtue is precisely what licenses contempt.
