# Grandiosity is the flip side of shame Grandiosity and shame are one distortion seen from two sides: both replace the truth about the self with a lie about its size. Many shortcomings are not flaws of character so much as false beliefs about myself, held and acted on. Shame is a lie, and under it you become an object to yourself, something appraised rather than someone who looks out at the world. Healing is neither inflating nor deflating the self but returning to the truth about it. Related: [[the-power-of-shame]], [[the-gaze-that-cast-us-out]], [[who-god-says-you-are]]
